Packaging & Labels

This Term we are doing an online Craft Market. We are so excited and looking forward to deciding what product we will make and sell. So part of our learning this week was around Packaging. We learnt about what important information goes into labels on packages. We created front and back labels for our product - Popcorn! The pictures represent what we created in groups. This was our first attempt and know that we are still developing our understanding. I wonder if you can identify some of the important things to have on product labels. Do you like the choice of packaging?

Room 11 went to the seniors today to have a lesson on how to do the Papakura Haka.

Yesterday we prepared for the lesson by seeing a recording of Cruze and TJ doing the Papakura Haka. The students got into groups of 4 to learn either the lyrics or the actions.

Today was a great way to get together to learn and practice.

The BFG

We have been listening to The BFG by Roald Dahl being read aloud, mostly after lunch while drinking Milk in Schools' milk.

The students were on the edge of their seats as the Queen of England met Sophie on the windowsill after having just dreamt about meeting a girl sitting on the windowsill.

As a class we have been talking about dream jars, and mixing two dreams together, like the BFG did.

Today we looked at the other meaning of 'dream' - a personal dream - a goal. The students drafted their personal dreams on paper and then some students opted to digitise them. Others opted to decorate their dream jars with crayons, colours and glitter.

Check out the digital dream jars from the class.

Collaborative Maths - First week back

As a class we are doing collaborative maths in small groups. The children are given a problem and then in groups of 3 or 4, they pool ideas and knowledge in how to solve it.  The students are given roles like 'recorder, reporter and keeper-on-tracker'.

We 'warm-up' our maths brains first with a dot-talk. This particular dot talk is designed for multiplicative thinking answers as there are too many dots to count one-to-one.

Here are some photos of this week's collaborations. We are taking extra time to thoroughly wash our hands and sanitise frequently, also we are ensuring that we are not in each other's 'breath zone'.

Welcome Back to School

Welcome back to school! It has been great to see so many shiny, happy student faces at school.  We miss the students who are staying at home.

A gentle reminders that parents are not allowed on the school campus to drop off or collect students at their classrooms unless the parents sign in at the office - this is for contact tracing purposes during Level 2.

Make sure the students and parents know which gate they are meeting at, when the school bell goes at the end of the day.

Lots of sanitising is going on and healthy hand washing.

Lots of art and music going on at school this week to help us all settle back into our school routine.

Spotlight on Saadhi

Saadhi wrote a flash-fiction piece on the characters you'd find if you were exploring the science of light... Here is her writing.

Story of UV and IF

Ones upon time  there was UV and IF.
They didn't know each other.
One day, the IF was in a rush  to go to work.
But IF crashed into UV then IF got a little shock, because UV was a girl and she was beautiful.
They both climbed to the top of the roof to see nature.
They fell into a solar panel on the roof top and created a cell, which then electrified
and produced electricity! This electricity was then used for lighting bulbs, TV, Fridge Etc.

And they all lived happily ever after.

Farming

Kia ora, today's distance learning is about Farming. My late great-grandfather was a dairy farmer in Yorkshire in England. I am very fond of dairy products, like butter, milk and cheese. I wonder what you think about farming?

Funnily enough, FlipGrid gave me a badge as a FlipGrid Farmer - for having made 25+ grids and "cultivating fields of opportunity for our community to share their voice" and here is the badge.

Class Badges for Awesomeness at Distance Learning

We have been distance learning now for a couple of weeks and I wanted to say "WOW".  Students in Room 11 have amazed me with their ability to do the learning either independently or with family and whanau help. I am IMPRESSED how we have all adapted and been flexible.

As a class we have been doing so many FlipGrid responses that I got a teacher award as a Certified FlipGrid Educator!

As distance learners, the children have been reading books on Epic like crazy, so much that as a class we got a new milestone on our Readerpillar.

Distance Learning starts tomorrow!

Room 11 starts distance learning tomorrow!

There is a Google Hangout link on the Class Site Home Page. Come by and have a quick look at the learning and then at 9.30am join the Hangout.

We will catch up, learn how to mute our microphones and use our thumbs like we already know how!

It will be awesome to see the students tomorrow.

Remember, any time we are all learning something new can feel chaotic at first. But I reckon we've got this.
